Republican Voter Suppression Starting Already

Jesse Lee, at the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee (DCCC) checks in with the news we knew was coming sooner than later: That the Republicans have already started their election-day initiatives which, as they often do, are targeted at keeping Democrats from voting.

According to the DCCC, Republicans have spent $2.1 million in the last week on automated calls, targeting 46 Democrats, where Democratic households are called in the middle of the night in a direct attempt to anger them and discourage them from voting. This is similar to the crap the GOP pulled in New Hampshire in 2002 when the Republican party jammed phones lines used for Democratic get-out-the-vote efforts so that Democrats needing a ride to the polls could not get through.

“With no record of accomplishment on the economy or border security and no strategy to speak of in Iraq, the only thing Republicans have left to sell is fear itself and Americans aren’t buying,” said Bill Burton, communications director of the DCCC. “It’s time for a new direction in Washington because Americans deserve bipartisan solutions to the problems we face, not more dirty tricks and illegal calls meant to intimidate.”
