Begich Wins Alaska Senate Seat

On a day that has us very upset over Joe "Turncoat" Lieberman getting off scot free for campaigning for John McCain and smearing President-elect Barack Obama throughout 2008, we have some great news.

The Anchorage Daily News and MSNBC are reporting at this hour that Democrat Mark Begich has defeated Republican incumbent -- and convicted felon -- Ted Stevens to win the hotly-contested Alaska Senate seat.

After 24,000 absentee and contested ballots were counted on Tuesday, Begich's lead widened to 3,724 votes and, with only 2,500 overseas ballots left to be counted, it's over.

“I am humbled and honored to serve Alaska in the United States Senate,” Begich said this evening. “It’s been an incredible journey getting to this point, and I appreciate the support and commitment of the thousands of Alaskans who have brought us to this day. I can’t wait to get to work fighting for Alaskan families.”

Stevens has not yet conceded.

But this is wonderful news and a great way to end the day.
