Congratulations Senator Menendez

Congratulations to Democrat Robert Menendez, who was sworn in yesterday as U.S. senator for New Jersey, taking over the term of Jon Corzine, who took office as the state’s governor this week.

Menendez, the son of Cuban immigrants, was the first New Jersey Latino in the state legislature and in Congress. He represented the state's 13th district and was the chairman of the House Democratic caucus.

The 52-year-old seven-term congressman will face a Senate election in less than 10 months -- when Corzine’s term was due to expire -- and the extent to which he will be challenged in a Democratic primary remains to be seen.

But, for today, we welcome Senator Menendez.
