Bush Nominates Roberts For Supreme Court

Well, the wait is over and President Bush has nominated federal appeals judge John G. Roberts Jr. as the next Associate Justice on the U.S. Supreme Court.

My initial take is that we need to take a deep breath and see what Senate Democrats, the press – hey, they seem to have found a spine lately! – and we bloggers come up with on the guy's background and beliefs.

Though I must say that it seems odd that he has only two years experience as a judge, which seems a bit like playing a couple of years of high-school baseball and thinking you'll be starting for the Yankees tomorrow.

It sounds kind of like Bush is using the Supreme Court to reward a past contributor and partisan political operative far more than having made an honest effort to seek the most qualified judge for the appointment.

Is Roberts a consensus candidate? Let's sit a spell and see what develops.
