Merkley Ousts Smith In Oregon

In another outstanding pickup for Senate Democrats, Jeff Merkley, speaker of the Oregon House of Representatives, has been declared the winner over Republican incumbent -- and Bush rubber-stamper -- Gordon Smith in this year's hotly-contested Oregon Senate race. The most recent totals have Merkley at 49 percent to 46 percent for Smith, with a margin of over 43,000 votes for the Democrat.

Merkley said that the Republican called him this morning to congratulate him and offer help in the transition.

"This is the beginning of a transformational change for America," Merkley said at a news conference at Portland State University today, adding that he would work closely with President-elect Barack Obama "to put this nation back on track."

"I am deeply humbled by the trust you have put in me. It is tremendous. Thank you," said Merkley on the front page of his campaign web site today. "Thank you for your support and for your vote. I am deeply humbled to be your next U.S. Senator."

"Onward for change"

Yes, indeed.
