The Face Of The American Taliban

What the Far Right thinks and believes has become even more important as our country considers this Supreme Court nominee and the one that's sure to follow when Judge Rehnquist retires.

When we think of the prehistoric ideology that characterized the Taliban's rule in Afghanistan, we like to think of our own social order as being quite far removed from something so backward. And America is indeed light years away from such a society – in general.

But, boy, do we have our nuts too. And, under the Bush administration, they are finding a high-level voice they have not had for a very long time, if ever.

My friend, Mike Kolesar, forwarded me a link to an enlightening and scary site titled simply The American Taliban. This web site gives a ton of quotes from some of the most ignorant and delusional people America has to offer, including:

"Don't use the word 'gay' unless it's an acronym for 'Got Aids Yet'" -- Bob Dornan; Rep. R-CA

"We are engaged in a social, political, and cultural war. There's a lot of talk in America about pluralism. But the bottom line is somebody's values will prevail. And the winner gets the right to teach our children what to believe." -- Gary Bauer; American Values

"God told me to strike at al Qaida and I struck them, and then he instructed me to strike at Saddam, which I did, and now I am determined to solve the problem in the Middle East. If you help me I will act, and if not, the elections will come and I will have to focus on them." – George W. Bush; Kinda, sorta President of the United States

"With all due respect to those dear people, my friend, God Almighty does not hear the prayer of a Jew." -- Bailey Smith; Pointing The Way Crusade Ministry

Well, isn't that special?

When you look at what some of these people say and believe, you know that we do indeed have a Taliban of our own right here in America. And these people are most assuredly not what our nation is all about.

We need a new Supreme Court Justice who will provide at least as little an ideological home for these people as did Sandra Day O'Connor.

Please pay a visit to the site and look at the rest. You don't have to read "The Art of War" to understanding that knowing who you're fighting is necessary for victory.
